Diner 741 Restoration Update - April 2003

Work continues on EL Diner 741. The stairs that were installed by EL
on the sides of the car have been removed, and the two side access "doors"
have been covered up. This will be a temporary arrangement until sheet
metal work can be done. This has limited access to the car to the end
doors only. Being that 741 is coupled to a car with a vestibule (ex-VIA
Fitzwilliam), this is not a problem. The drop-ceiling installed by the
Erie Railroad during the early 1940s has been removed so the original
ceiling and roof can be inspected. We were surprised to find two Erie
diamond logos on the bulkheads above the drop-ceiling line (SEE PHOTO).
We are trying to find more information on this.
Work continues to restore the original configuration of the car. Because
the side doors are no longer accessible, OMR has removed the interior
vestibule door added by EL. This has restored the original doorway on
the lounge end of the car. Also, the end doors have been reinstalled
on both ends of the car. On the kitchen side, OMR has knocked out the
remaining plywood MoW walls, restoring the original configuration of
the hallway around the end of the kitchen.
Work has temporarily slowed down on 741 as we await the release of the
TEA-21 funds, which will go towards exterior restoration. However, work
continues of City of Lima, as well as the refurbishing of the lounge
chairs. |
